What is the Systems Engineering Initiative?
The Systems Engineering Initiative was formed in 2008 with a
focus to expand the Space Engineering Institute's approach
to non-NASA sponsors. The approach is to engage students in
real world engineering team projects that are both interdisciplinary
and multi-level (freshman to seniors) in order to improve student retention
an provide students with valuable engineering skills to better prepare
them for engineering careers.
Goals
- Increase the participation of underutilized groups pursuing careers in Space Engineering
- Improve student retention in engineering
- Enhance the engineering education of undergraduates
- Produce high quality technical output for the sponsors
Approach
- Engage SEI students in outreach activities to high schools, teacher summits, and career faris
- Engage freshman in applied projects to explain the engineering discipline early on
and provide them with upperclassmen, graduates, faculty, and industry mentors
- Engage students in interdisciplinary team projects sponsered by NASA and industry where they have
to solve real engineering problems. Provide students with engineering and professional development training
- Graduate students and faculty provide guidance to the undergraduate student team in accomplishing the team's
technical tasks.
